Based on an obscure tale, and one of Victor Hugo's most famous plays, La Gioconda is the most well-known creation by Amilcare Ponchielli. The play, in four acts, is set in ancient Venice. The suffering Gioconda disputes Enzo's love with Laura. At the same time, she is tormented by the evil Barnaba.

One of the highlights of La Gioconda is the famous Act 3 ballet Dance of the Hours. This memorable 1986 production is performed by the choir, ballet and orchestra of the Vienna State Opera, conducted by Adam Fischer. Starring Eva Marton as Gioconda and Placido Domingo as Enzo.
