"It was once customary to speak of the mind and the body as separate and distinct, almost as mutually opposed entities. Mind, said the older philosopher, is spiritual; body material. Material phenomena are extended in space; spiritual phenomena have no spatial attributes. Our minds are conscious; material objects are not. Therefore, argued the ancients, mind and body have nothing in common. Yet the observations of common sense bear out the results of modern science in demonstrating that the mind is inseparable from the body and directly and peculiarly dependent on it."
