Smithsonian Institution Building1855James Renwick, Jr. Architect

"Inspired by a priceless treasure from the Smithsonian Institution. Often called the "Castle" on the Mall, the Smithsonian Institution's first building was constructed around 1850 in a medieval revival style. The original 1855 brass key to the castle has been used for ceremonial purposes for over 30 years. Just as the castle has come to be a symbol of the entire Smithsonian Insitution, the sun emblem was taken frp the Smithson coat of arms. This has come to symbolize the Smithsonian's original charge to serve as a center "for the increase and diffusion of knowledge."

"Now you can share in the Smithsonian's mission with this shining work of gold tone and frosted cabochon jewelry. As with all pieces in this collection, it was meticulously created under the guidance of the Smithsonian Institution and bears the Smithsonian's seal of authorization."
