I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut song below.) ....... This is a rare February 19th, 1962 playbill from the Pre-Broadway tryout of the RICHARD RODGERS and SAMUEL TAYLOR musical "NO STRINGS" at the Hanna Theatre in Cleveland, Ohio. (The production would open March 15th, 1962 at the 54th Street Theatre in New York City and run for 580 performances.) ..... The musical starred RICHARD KILEY and DIAHANN CARROLL and featured POLLY ROWLES, NOELLE ADAM, BERNICE MASSI, DON CHASTAIN, ALVIN EPSTEIN and MITCHELL GREGG ..... CREDITS: Music and Lyrics by RICHARD RODGERS ("On Your Toes", "Babes in Arms", "I Married An Angel", "Pal Joey", "Oklahoma!", "Carousel", "The King and I", "Me & Juliet", "South Pacific", "Flower Drum Song", "The Sound of Music", "No Strings", "Two By Two", "I Remember Mama", "Rex"); Book by SAMUEL TAYLOR; Sets designed by DAVID HAYS; Costumes designed by FRED VOELPEL and DONALD BROOKS; Directed and Choreographed by JOE LAYTON; Produced by RICHARD RODGERS in association with SAMUEL TAYLOR ..... DETAILS: The 32 page playbill measures 5 7/8" X 8 1/2" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and bios of each of the leading actors, but no cast photos ..... CUT SONG: The list of musical numbers includes "Yankee Go Home" which was cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of a light vertical crease, this rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
