Item:  1907 Edwardian English Antique Sterling Silver Apostle Spoon Sheffield. St Peter. A very nice example of an English Sterling Silver Apostle Spoon made by Joseph Rogers & Son The spoon has a full set of English sterling Silver hallmarks and has a highly polished silver finish in its entirety and has the benefit of being un-monogrammed and free from personalisation.  To the top we see the Apostle St Peter standing upon a plinth.  The apostle spoon is made of a nice quality silver finishing.  For the most part, these spoons were made individually for wealthy grandparents of the time, who would buy one spoon representing a babies "apostle" and would be their Christening present. This spoon would be used only by that person and it would be kept for life. The phrase "to be born with a silver spoon" stems from this tradition. I have seen that people are now engraving names onto the back of the spoon for newborn, Christenings and Communion  Presents, this example has NO engravings or monograms.   For the collector or investor of fine English Silverware.  Hallmarked for Sheffield England?s most famous silversmith town. Would make a superb gift RefAS21

Saint Peter. Brother of Saint Andrew and born with the name of Simon. Jesus named him 'Peter' and told him "To you I will give the keys to the kingdom of Heaven". He was either martyred and crucified upside down or, says another legend, he was beheaded in a forest so that other Christians could not find and venerate his bones. His feast day is the 29th of June. He is the Patron Saint of fishermen, clockmakers and locksmiths. The spoon shows him holding a key.
