GROWING INSTRUCTIONS:

A hardy, warm-weather vine, Tribulus terrestris, also known as puncture vine, is a perennial hardy to U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zone 10, but it also grows as an annual in colder climates. Tribulus has been cultivated as an herbal remedy and is used by Chinese medicine practitioners to treat a number of ailments. Once established, Tribulus needs little to no attention to thrive, and it can quickly spread across a garden, overtaking other plants. Tribulus is classified as a noxious weed in some regions of the United States and other countries.

1

Stratify seeds for one to three months before planting them. Place the seeds in a tray or container containing moist sand, and store in the refrigerator. Check on the seeds once a week until signs of germination (the swelling of seeds and appearance of sprouts) are visible.

2

Choose a site for planting that receives long periods of direct sunlight. Tribulus prefers south or southeast exposure where it will receive the most amount of sun and the warmest temperatures. Make sure that there is a 3- to 4-foot radius around the planting site to give room for the plant to spread. Tribulus is a crawling vine, preferring to stretch out along the ground.

3

Dig a trench around the growing bed and bury a plastic garden barrier 1 foot deep to prevent the spreading of the plant beyond its designated area. Tribulus grows quickly, and can overwhelm a garden if not kept in check.

4

Plant the seeds out in the garden once they have begun to germinate. Prepare a planting bed with sandy soil. Tribulus is tolerant of many soil conditions but does best in sandy, well-drained soil. Mix sand into the topsoil of the garden bed if necessary to improve the drainage. Plant the seeds half an inch deep in the soil and pat it down gently. Water the soil until moist.

5

Water the newly planted seeds once every two days until the seedlings reach 6 inches. Once established, the plant will need very little water to survive. Water once a week in dry conditions. Tribulus does not need any fertilizer to grow and can survive well on nutrient-poor soils.

6

Monitor the growth of the plant and cut back branches as they reach out beyond the border of the plastic garden barrier. Tribulus vines that are not kept back will root on the other side of the barrier and spread to the rest of the garden. In cold climates, tribulus is killed by frost but will return from seeds dropped in the previous year. In warmer climates, the plant will continue to grow, root and spread across the garden if not cut back.
