It is almost certainly a German set from about 1850; This set dates from that period. It was a very popular design with craftsmen, as all the men can be turned on a lathe, except for the knight. The pieces are made of bovine bone, not ivory; none of the pieces exhibit the characteristic yellowing found in ivory, nor do they have Schreger marks.  White king is  about 4 1/4 inches in height; Red king is of a different design and is 3 3/4 inches in height; both have a base of about 1 1/4  of an inch. Chess men are unweighted and unfelted. This is a library set.

The set is made up of a lot of mismatched men. White kingside is quite a sight: king tilts noticeably; White king's rook pawn is a mismatch for his seven brothers; White king's knight is from another set; White king's rook has a noticeable crack. The Red king and queen are different also; the red pawns are of different sizes!  Other than that, the set is perfect :) Please see photographs. How did this happen? Something like this, I suspect:

"Your lordship, there are French warships in the harbor!"

"What! French warships in the harbor! Quick save the chess men! And that bottle of Madeira! No, save the port instead! Wait! Save the port and the Madeira! And that bottle of brandy!"

These chess men are like the orphan girls in the Methuen Home where Beth Harmon spent her childhood. They await adoption by some kindly soul who will overlook their imperfections.

We are adding in this brand-new board as well. The board is vinyl as can be seen in the photographs. The footprint of the board is about 13 1/2 inches by 13 1/2 inches; each playing square is about 1 7/16 inches. We put them in a cigar box for safe storage.

Worth every penny and then some. Buy this set, prop up your gouty leg, pour a glass of port, and cheer the victories of the Royal Navy over the French, then sing "Rule Britannia."
