British submarines HMS Meteorite
German WWII submarine type XVIIB Walter boats
Type XVII submarines are an experimental series of
small submarines equipped with a Walter engine, which made it possible to
develop high speeds while moving under water and consumed less oxygen, which
allowed the boat to stay submerged longer.
The construction of working submarines of the Type
XVII (Type XVIIB) was started by the shipbuilding company Blohm & Voss in
Hamburg. Submarines of type XVIIB, in contrast to type XVIIA, had only one
Walter engine.
After the war, the Royal Navy of Great Britain rebuilt U-1407 (Type XVIIB) and enlisted it on 25 September 1945 under the name HMS Meteorite. She served as a model for two other submarines: HMS Explorer and HMS Excalibur. Submarine "HMS Meteorite" was decommissioned in July 1949 and scrapped in 1950.
