Steller's jay has a frail bill, a medium tail, staggered at its tip. The head is covered with a moderate ridge running from the middle to the back of the hood. The legs are relatively shorter and the bill thinner than that of the Blue Jay. In the nominate race, the crest, head and upper breast are brownish to greyish black, becoming somewhat paler on mantle, back and sides of the neck. The forehead feathers have a light blue termination. The chin and throat have fine whitish streaks
