FRIDA KAHLO (1907-1954) x Nickolas Muray (American, born Hungary, 1892-1965),

'Frida on Bench, New York City', 1939/2020

'Appearances Can Be Deceiving' Museum Art Exhibition Poster

Offset lithograph photograph portrait poster printed in a semi-gloss on heavy-weight paper. Dimensions: 36" x 24" sheet. BRAND NEW.

This celebrated image, taken in Nickolas Muray's New York studio, has a floral backdrop made from a fabric similar to one of Kahlo's skirts. Kahlo usually preferred to pose in three-quarter view, but here she gazes straight at the camera.

Muray and Kahlo were at the height of their on-again, off-again, ten-year relationship when this picture was taken. Their affair had started in 1931, after Muray was divorced from his second wife, and shortly after Kahlo's marriage to Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. It outlived Muray's third marriage, and Kahlo's divorce and remarriage to Rivera, by one year, ending in 1941. They remained good friends until her death in 1954.

Mexican artist Frida Kahlo's unique and immediately recognizable style was an integral part of her identity. Kahlo came to define herself through her ethnicity, disability, and politics, all of which were at the heart of her work. Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving is the largest U.S. exhibition in ten years devoted to the iconic painter and the first in the United States to display a collection of her clothing and other personal possessions, which were rediscovered and inventoried in 2004 after being locked away since Kahlo's death, in 1954. They are displayed alongside important paintings, drawings, and photographs from the celebrated Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection of 20th Century Mexican Art, as well as related historical film and ephemera.

Frida Kahlo Appearances Can Be Deceiving examines how politics, gender, trauma, and national identity influenced Kahlo's diverse modes of creativity. The exhibition features highly personal items from her lifelong home, La Casa Azul in Mexico City—including photographs, costumes from her wardrobe, and personalize braces and prosthetics—alongside paintings and drawings by the iconic artist and photographs reflecting her unique self-fashioning.
