SECRETS, GOSSIP & SLANDER

By Carol Bergé
1984

First printing of this academic novel, in the tradition of Randall Jarrell's NOTES FROM AN INSTITUTION, only vaguely disguised as fiction.

Very good.

Published by Ishmael Reed's publishing company, SECRETS caused something of a literary scandal at the time. Berge is unfortunately something of a forgotten figure from the second generation the New York School. Indeed, she left the east coast and became an antique dealer in New Mexico (where she died in 2006) soon after the appearance of this book, and published very little after. But her mimeo CENTER remains an important journal. And this, one of her last works, is oddly uncommon.

New York: Reed Books, 1984. Wraps. 8vo. Trade paperback original. 234pp. An easily very good copy, with minor stains and creasing.
