Hoping to populate a micro or nano tank with a fun and colorful fish?

Looking to add a splash of color to the top level of your community aquarium? If you answered yes to either of the above questions, consider the Clown Killifish, one of the tiniest killifish around.

Clown Killies are also known as rocket killies and banded panchax, although the latter name is certainly not as common

Clown Killies are top-level dwellers, so if you have a larger nano tank and are searching for something to fill in that often overlooked section, these micro predators are a great choice. It’s fun to watch them lay in wait for their prey to swim by, at which point they’ll use their upturned mouths to grab it off the surface of the water.

Clown Killifish are peaceful fish, but they are predators. Instead of chasing their prey, they lie in wait near the water’s surface. When unsuspecting insects skim the surface, the Clown Killies ambush them, grabbing them with their upturned mouths.

Because they are so small, they are more in danger from other fish than they are to them, so they need to be housed with other small fish if you are not keeping a dedicated tank. They are shy, so Clown Killifish do better in groups of up to 10 fish. When they are in groups, they are less shy and more playful.

Speaking of play, Clown Killies are accomplished jumpers, and thus you would be wise to maintain a tight-fitting tank for these little fish.

Clown Killies will need stiller waters or at the very least a slow current. This water requirement is significant for a couple of reasons. First, the cleanliness of the tank is more challenging without a filter. It’s not as much of an issue in the wild because the water body is so much larger, but in a micro or nano tank, it can be more challenging to keep things clean.

If you have no filter, you will have to compensate with regular water changes and abundant foliage, which will help keep the water clean. The second consideration is other aquarium habitats. Some loaches and tetras, for example, require a strong current, and therefore they would not be good choices for tankmates for Clown Killifish. You can use a micro or nano tank for Clown Killifish; they’re tiny enough that you can house multiples in a tank that small. You can also choose to house them in a larger community tank that already has a bottom and mid-tank inhabitants; that way the Clown Killies can occupy the top part of the tank.

There are some benefits and drawbacks of smaller and larger tanks. You should be aware that Clown KIllifish won’t reproduce as much if they share a larger tank with other species, so if you’re hoping for Clown Killifish fry, you may want to choose the smaller, dedicated tank.

However, a smaller tank usually has a strong filter that produces too strong a current for Clown Killies.

Tank Mates

Choose small and peaceful fish to pair with Clown Killies if you are not planning a dedicated tank for these tiny fish.

Suitable Tankmates

  • Bettas
  • Corydoras Catfish
  • Danios
  • Gouramis
  • Minnows
  • Small Barbs
  • Small Plecos
  • Some Varieties Of Tetras
  • nano shrimp
  • snails

Diet

Clown Killies are carnivores, so they need live and frozen meaty proteins. The only catch is that because they are tiny, they need tiny portions of meaty protein, like insects. They lay in wait for the insects to land on the water’s surface and then go in for their prey.

This is what they’ll eat in the wild, and this is what you should mimic in captivity. Try a combination of the following foods 1-2 times a day:

Baby Brine Shrimp

Copepods

Fruit Flies

Microworms

Moina

Mosquito Larvae

Small Daphnia

Small Grindal Worms

Vinegar Eels

Walter Worms

How to introduce your new fish to your tanks?

Before the fish arrive you should have changed the water in your quarantine tank and ensure that the tank is mature and fully cycled so it is ready for your new additions, all new fish should be quarantined separately from your existing stock for at least 7-14 days to ensure they are happy and healthy and to let them get over the stress of transportation without being harassed by your existing stock.

When your fish arrive, turn off your aquarium light. Inspect your new fish in the bags and if all is ok  then float the bag on the tank for a period of about 20 minutes to help equalize the temperatures. Then cut the bag below the metal clip and roll the top down so that the bag can float in the aquarium. Add a cup of aquarium water to the bag and leave for a further 5 minutes then add another cup and wait another 5 minutes. You can then release your fish by netting them and putting them in your tank. Never add the bagged water to your aquarium

DOA's & Returns
***We offer an arrive alive  guarantee on  all of our fish this guarantee is only valid if you have followed  the  conditions set out below to the letter!***

ALTHOUGH VERY RARE, IF YOU HAVE NEED TO MAKE A  CLAIM ON THE GUARANTEE  PLEASE DO NOT DISPOSE OF THE FISH UNTIL YOU HAVE SPOKEN  TO US AS IT MAY BE  NECESSARY FOR US TO EXAMINE IT

3) you must supply us with  pictures of the fish within the bag UNOPENED and  a picture of the  packaging they arrived in.

Please take the time to video thats starts before breaking the box seals, opening the the box and unpacking of the bags as they come out of the box upon delivery as this is required to validate your DOA warranty should the need arise and can provide valuable evidence should a courier claim be required as this is your insurance policy. In the extremely unlikely event that any fish are dead on arrival, contact us immediately with supporting video of the fish in the bag. We will not be accountable for any fish after they have been released from the bag and introduced to your environment

We guarantee live arrival of your livestock. However in the unlikely event of any of your fish arriving DOA, please take clear photo evidence and send it to us via ebay messages.

The deceased fish must be still in the original bag, unopened

We cannot cover any fish that have died once they have enter your systems water.

Once we have received your video evidence of the DOA in the original packaging, we will at our discretion refund you straight away, or send a replacement fish out free of charge with your next order.

We do not refund any shipping charges. and no fish can be returned once received due to animal welfare issues in packing them correctly for returning

On the rare occasion where a return of live fish has been agreed it is your responsibility to ensure that they are packaged safely and humanely so as not to cause the fish any unnecessary suffering during transit.

All fish should be placed in fish bags with rounded bottoms to ensure the fish cant get trapped in the corners of the bags with a  ratio of 1/3 water to 2/3 air and will require medical grade oxygen to inflate the bags to ensure the fish do not suffocate in transit,

the bags should be of sufficient size to allow the fish enough room to swim upright and be able to turn round in the bags without having to bend

we recommend that all fish should be double bagged to prevent fish from puncturing the bags in transit

they then should be returned in the polystyrene box that we sent them to you in and depending on the species being returned they may require the use of a new heat pack (mainly for tropical species)

**PLEASE NOTE**
