UKIYO-E ART
JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT
BOXED MUG

Three stunning artworks by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, featuring valiant samurai and terrifying beasts!

★ Printed on a high-quality ceramic mug and presented in a matching box with traditional Japanese "
asanoha" all-over pattern
and calligraphy of the artist's name and titles of the artworks.

1. "Oniwakamaru and the carp" (鬼若丸の鯉退治), 1798–1861. Saito Oniwakamaru was the boyhood name of the legendary monk and warrior
Benkei (1155–1189). There is a legend that when he was studying Buddhism at Mount Hiei as a youth, he have fought and killed
an enormous monster carp that have earlier attacked and eaten his mother.

2. "Watōnai Capturing a Tiger" (和藤内), c. 1830s. In this dramatic scene the legendary hero Watonai Coxinga faces of with a tiger
in the Bamboo Forest of a Thousand Leagues during his travels in China. He subdues the beast, aided by a charm from the Great Shrine of Ise.
Watonai and the monstrous tiger then join forces to defeat a group of Chinese soldiers! The image composition is stunning,
with both opponents fixing their fierce eyes on each other, both bodies twisted in almost yin-yang like symmetry!

3. "Ario-maru" (有王丸), 1833–1835. The artwork is depicting Ario-maru fighting a giant octopus on the seashore. Ariomaru was a servant
of Shunkwan, a priest exiled to an inhospitable island by Kiyomori for plotting against him. Shunkwan's exile was a subject
of No drama and it was often a theme for illustrations.  In this particular scene the loyal servant Ario-maru is fighting off
the giant octopus that was about to kill Shunkwan!
