Because silver certificates used to be redeemable for silver dollars, the Treasury kept large quantities of silver dollars on hand. However, the end of the era of silver dollar distribution, the Treasury realized that they still had three million silver dollars on hand, mostly struck at the former mint in Carson City, Nevada. Between 1972 and 1974, most of the dollars were liquidated by the General Services Administration through a mail bid system. However, some of the coins that remained were sold in several final sales in 1980.
