The state of Arizona is under a stay-at-home order which is making our shipping difficult. We are extending our shipping limit to 20 days. We hope to ship in less time, and we hope soon to be back to our old policy of ten days. We ask for and hope for your patience.

Once upon a time, and a very good time it was, chess sets were often made of wood and always made by master craftsmen. Immortal names like "Jaques and Sons" and "Ayres" and "Uhlig" dominated the chess set market.  After World War II a French firm, Lardy, set out to capture the wood chess set market. They made both high-end collector's sets and ready-market sets.

This set was marketed by U.S. Chess Federation in the mid-1990's . The knights have a wider muzzle than the usual Lardy set, so this may be an imitation. If it is, credit is due the imitator, as the kings and queens have slight "Lardy Leans."  They are slight, I can't manage to bring them out in the photographs, but the leans are there if you look closely.

This set is large, and I mean quite large, though not huge. The royalty is an odd lot.

The kings are 3 3/4 inches tall, with  1 1/4 inch bases.

The chess men are  for a standard vinyl board. A board with 2.5 inch squares will probably do.

The men are weighted, without cracks. The felt is very good; I know for a fact the set was never used.  The varnish is glossy; the box is a sliding top box and is in excellent condition.

I, Ed Yetman, have been a tournament director for 40 years and verify that this set is legal for tournament play according to the U.S. Chess Federation rules, though other directors may disagree.
