Antique Burmese Bronze Pagan Buddha Statue. Myanmar 11/12th C. Century.

Pagan Image: In strong contrast to the traditional Southeast Asia Buddha, the work presented here is typical of sculptures in the Burmese Buddhist Kingdom of Pagan, which was founded in the middle of the eleventh century. In countries like Burma, where rulers enjoy very high semi-divine status, religious figures of this type justify the need for kings to worship the Buddha, the King of Kings.

Description: PAGAN PERIOD: An inspiring Burmese Pagan Buddha image stands in a frontal and static pose, with feet firmly planted on a small round plinth, with his hands raised in Mudra. The proportions of the figure and facial type have been altered to reflect the local taste of the Pagan era. The body is highly conceptualized and has lost a close corespondence with the human form - with proportions of the body, hands ,and shoulders, have all become exaggerated, and the garment devoid of jewelry. The face with broad features is highly detailed with wide slanted eyes, forehead, bowed eyebrows connected above a long nose, upturned mouth, square jaw, and small chin. The head is covered in small hair pin-curls, surmounted by a domed ushnisha, which rises to a flame-like finial. The Buddha appears in an unadorned monastic robe which clings to the body and flares outward from the forearms. The robe does not resemble real fabric, but instead clings to the Buddha as if they were transparent, revealing the upper hem of the skirt, and robust form of the upper body. The Buddha makes the gesture of protection with his right hand, and in his left, holds the folded hem of his outter robe.
xxxx The sculpture has a superb rich dark brown patina, with traces of green malachite developing throughout the surface. Based on its weight vs size, the sculpture is a solid case.
