"Maple Trees at Mama, Tekona Shrine and Linked Bridge" ("Mama no Koyou Tekona no Shatsugihashi" 真間の紅葉手古那の社継はし)
by Hiroshige Utagawa, from the "One Hundred Famous Views Of Edo" series, 1857.

Tekona Shrine was built near the Mama River in Chiba, to honour the legendary beauty Tekona who perished in the nearby cove. The shrine was famous for bringing good luck in easy child-bearing, so it was a popular place for pilgrimage despite it's 10 mile distance from central Edo - especially so, since it was widely renowned for it's gorgeous maples and stunning autumn scenes.

Hiroshige boldly puts the main attraction of the scene, the briliant maple leaves of Mama, in the foreground of the image. They are dominating the view over the shrine and the bridge of the title, lightly framing the flock of birds flying across the tranquil sunset sky, the rose hues of the clouds offsetting the deep orange of the perfect maple branch.
