From the artist's website (rielfineart.com):
"One of my greatest loves is observing the natural world and bringing it to life. Originally from Santa Barbara, California, I grew up amidst the scenery and subtleties of nature. My love of the natural sciences led to a career in traditional botanic and zoological scientific illustration as a museum illustrator. Later, as technologies evolved, I moved on to high-end 3D computer art and animation with a successful career as a professional senior illustrator and art director.

My artwork is often a study of contrasts. I have a great love for the open spaces of the Western sky, and they are often subjects of my traditional work. At the other extreme, I am fascinated by the minutia of insect patterns or the accurate depiction of native wildflowers. The two extremes share a love for light and texture, enticing the viewer into the artwork.

A great deal of my inspiration comes from the early California Impressionists, with their love of light and rich colors that combine for a heightened realism. This website showcases my work portraying traditional Native American artifacts and wildlife. It also highlights my southwestern and California landscapes with their vast panoramas, many of which include the shifting nature of light. I love the quality and the changing light that clouds bring; they add richness and depth to the horizon. I strive to capture the vivid sensation of an incoming storm, the scent of distant places in the wind, or the rain in distant sage."
