In The Context Of Its Time. A history Of Woodlands by Val Adolph. Published by The Government of British Columbia, Ministry of Social Services. 1996 softcover

"This book is mostly about the place called Woodlands in New Westminster. First built as the Lunatic Asylum, Woodlands later became home to most of the province's mentally handicapped children. In its 118 years history  it saw dedicated staff, caring far beyond the norm, and a great deal of innovation.

"This book reflects the history of the province. You will find that patients were separated into three groups: male, female and Chinese. In the Depression staff were hired for their political affiliation. You'll read about ... the first windows, set so high that patients spent their days standing on tables so they could see out ... the water supply so poor that water had to be scooped out of ditches ... about female staff who had to sign resignation slips when they were hired."
