Ivan Petrovitch Pranishnikoff is a Russian painter and illustrator as well as an archaeological prospector, frequent traveler in Europe and North America. He was born on May 3, 1841, in the Kursk region, in western Russia, of aristocratic parents. His family was enriched during the continental blockade of Napoleon by the trade in beet sugar, huge quantities of which came from factories and the family farm. At the time of the young Yvan she followed the assignments of the father, an officer of the tsar in Poland occupied by the Russians. A boarder in a military high school in Warsaw, Ivan then studied painting around 1858 at the Saint-Luc Academy in Rome where he received his artistic training. He works with the Russian painter Nikolai Gay. In 1860, he would have joined Garibaldi and would have covered Montenegro's war of independence for the periodical L'Illustration. Between 1861 and 1866, he resumed a cycle of pictorial studies in Italy, in Florence, before going to Paris to study with Charles-Gabriel Gleyre. In 1867, he returned to Russia, Moscow and Kazan, where he exercised various trades including that of drawing teacher in a college for young girls in Ekaterinburg, worker in a telegraph company or wood sculptor. He then went to North America, first to Canada in 1871, where he married in 1874, then to New York around 1875-1876. In 1879 or 1880, he returned to Europe and settled in Paris. He attended the Mutual Aid and Benefit Society of Russian painters in Paris and met at that time, Ivan Tourgueniev, whose works he would translate into Provencal a few years later. He discovered Provence in 1880, thanks to Daudet, Lamartine and Mistral who came to present Mireille in Paris. And from 1882, he made stays in the south of France in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. In the years 1887-1894, he was official painter of the ministry of war of Alexander III, emperor of Russia, and visits Russia every summer. Around 1899-1900, he settled definitively in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer where he frequented the Provençal Félibers including Frédéric Mistral, participated in the activities of the Camargue gardians with the Marquis Folco de Baroncelli-Javon and was particularly interested local prehistory; he draws up a very exhaustive inventory of megalithic monuments and archaeological sites in Languedoc and Provence (his album of photographs can be found at the Arlaten museum in Arles). He integrated in 1904, from their creation, the Prehistoric Society of France and the Archaeological Society of Provence. Among other publications, he owes him, in 1907, a study on the engravings of the menhir of Congénies (Gard). He died on April 16, 1909 in Les Saintes, where he was buried. His wife also had the sculptor Léopold Bernard Bernstamm make a bronze bust of her husband, unfortunately stolen since. In the main street, on the facade of the house he lived in, a plaque affixed in 1912 recalls his memory.
N.B. This lithogravure from around 1860 was the subject, on our part, of a special treatment in order to make disappear the outrages of time and, in particular, the numerous foxings which smeared it. After this treatment, we pasted it on a watermarked paper. This treatment had the effect of "rejuvenating" it; however, it remains an authentic lithogravure from the second half of the 19th century.

Ivan Petrovitch Pranishnikoff est un peintre et illustrateur russe ainsi qu'un prospecteur archéologique, grand voyageur en Europe et en Amérique du Nord. Il naît le 3 mai 1841, dans la région de Koursk, en Russie occidentale, de parents aristocrates. Sa famille s'était enrichie lors du blocus continental de Napoléon par le commerce du sucre de betterave dont d'énormes quantités provenaient des usines et du domaine agricole familial. À l'époque du jeune Yvan elle suivait les affectations du père, officier du tsar en Pologne occupée par les Russes. Pensionnaire dans un lycée militaire de Varsovie, Ivan étudie ensuite vers 1858 la peinture à l'académie Saint-Luc à Rome où il reçoit sa formation artistique. Il travaille avec le peintre russe Nikolaï Gay. En 1860, il se serait engagé aux côtés de Garibaldi et aurait couvert pour le périodique l'Illustration la guerre d'indépendance du Monténégro. Entre 1861 et 1866, il reprend un cycle d'études picturales en Italie, à Florence, avant de se rendre à Paris étudier chez Charles-Gabriel Gleyre. En 1867, il retourne en Russie, à Moscou et à Kazan, où il exerce divers métiers dont celui de professeur de dessin dans un collège de jeunes filles à Ekaterinbourg, d’ouvrier dans une entreprise de télégraphie ou de sculpteur sur bois. Il part ensuite en Amérique du Nord, d’abord au Canada en 1871, où il se marie en 1874, puis à New-York vers 1875-1876.. En 1879 ou 1880, il revient en Europe et s’installe à Paris. Il fréquente la Société d'aide mutuelle et de bienfaisance des peintres russes de Paris et rencontre à cette époque, Ivan Tourgueniev dont il traduira quelques années plus tard des œuvres en provençal. Il découvre la Provence en 1880, grâce à Daudet, Lamartine et Mistral venus présenter Mireille à Paris. Et dès 1882, il fait des séjours dans le sud de la France aux Saintes-Maries-de-la Mer. Dans les années 1887-1894, il est peintre officiel du ministère de la guerre d'Alexandre III, empereur de Russie, et se rend tous les étés en Russie. Vers 1899-1900, il s'installe définitivement aux Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer où il fréquente les félibres provençaux dont Frédéric Mistral, participe aux activités des gardians camarguais avec le marquis Folco de Baroncelli-Javon et s'intéresse tout particulièrement à la préhistoire locale; il établit un recensement très exhaustif des monuments mégalithiques et sites archéologiques du Languedoc et de la Provence (son album de photographies se trouve au musée Arlaten d'Arles). Il intègre ainsi en 1904, dès leurs créations, la Société Préhistorique de France et la Société Archéologique de Provence. Entre autres publications, on lui doit, en 1907, une étude sur les gravures du menhir de Congénies (Gard). Il meurt le 16 avril 1909 aux Saintes, où il est inhumé. Sa femme fait également réaliser par le sculpteur Léopold Bernard Bernstamm un buste en bronze de son époux, malheureusement dérobé depuis. Dans la rue principale, sur la façade de la maison qu'il habitait, une plaque apposée en 1912 rappelle son souvenir.
N.B.: Cette lithogravure des environs de 1860 a fait l'objet, de notre part, d'un traitement particulier afin de faire disparaître les outrages du temps et, en particulier, les nombreuses rousseurs qui la maculaient. Après ce traitement, nous l'avons contrecollée sur un papier filigrané. Ce traitement a eu pour effet de la "rajeunir" ; elle reste cependant une authentique lithogravure de la seconde moitié du 19eme siècle.
