For those who LOVE PYREX ..... a brand developed by CORNING Glass (est 1851) in 1912. PYREX has been produced in 3 Major Categories: CLEAR (1915 -); Flameware (1936-79); Coloured (Clear and Milk Glass) (1947-) ...

For most collectors & enthusiasts - THIS is where the story of PYREX began - with their HIGH QUALITY; STRAW-YELLOW; ICONIC Crystal-Clear Product Line - the GO-TO bake-ware items, even still.

Offered here are Two - VINTAGE-PYREX - Thin Crystal-Clear Glass, Round, Flare-Rim Style, 5-oz, Custard-Cups - with 3 Concentric Ribs on the Sides and a Level Top Edge in - most-excellent, barely-used condition. These Custard-Cups were released in the late 1940's - likely ~1947-8 - available briefly.

ALL glass surfaces are Super-Highly-Glossy, shiny, and clean - there are No obvious chips, cracks, nor flea bites; No significant scratches nor rubs; No hazing, marking, nor stains.

These Custard-Cups are all made of very thin or fine crystal-clear ovenproof glass. The glass has a slight straw-yellow cast, with some mold marks, and fine air bubbles, indicative of their era of manufacture. The form of these Custard Cups is elegant - the top edge is round, smooth and level, slightly flared-out at the upper rim - above the three concentric molded ribs around the exterior surface, about 1/2 way down; beneath the ribs, the form tapers-in and rounds at the bottom to the base seat rim - the center-base is slightly recessed.

These Custard-Cups measure - 4" in diameter, across the top edge; 1 3/8" in diameter, across the base seat rim; 1 7/8" in height.

Each Custard-Cup is embossed on the base - "445; T.M.REG.; U.S.PAT.OFF.; PYREX; 5-oz".

SOME INTERESTING INFORMATION –

Originally -

PYREX - Custard Cups, Pudding Cups, and Individual Baking and Serving Dishes

PYREX Originally released Custard Cups in 1915 - MPNs 402 (422) and 423. Over time, MPNs, sizes, and styles evolved.

The 423 4-oz Custard-Cup was one of the Original-12 PYREX ovenware items released in 1915.

The 422 6-oz Custard-Cup appeared in the 1918-25 PYREX catalogues along with the 423 custard-cup.

1919 – 1925 –

Three styles of Custard Cups were available a Round Deep-French Style Design, a Round Standard Shallower Flare-Rim Style Design, and an Oval Custard Cup - in a variety of different sizes.

Round Flared – 4-oz, 423; 6-oz 422

Oval – 5-oz, 427

Deep French – 4-oz 424; 5-oz 425; 6-oz 426

There were also three sizes of deep-French style custard cups - the 424 4-oz, 425 5-oz and 426 6-oz.

PYREX, CLEAR, Deep French Round Pattern, 426, 6oz - This item was released in 1921 then discontinued in 1947.

The model #424 does appear in the Morley Brothers 1919-25 Catalogue - so was probably released in the late teens or early 1920s.

The 4-oz, 424 French-Deep-Style Custard-Cup was replaced by the 5-oz, 425 French-Deep-Style Custard-Cup in 1932.

Late 1920’s – early 1930’s -

In the late 1920's to early 1930's the MPNs were re-worked.

In 1928 a 3 ½ -oz 410 Flared Custard Cup was available, along with the 424 and 426; In 1929 the 410 (3 ½ oz) and 422 (6-oz) Shallow-Flared and 424 (4-oz) and 426 (6-oz) Deep-French Custards were available.

Available in 1932 – previously discontinued 423 custard-cup was replaced with the 4-oz 414. Also, the 422 was discontinued and replaced with the 6-oz 416 custard-cup - both being Shallow Flare-rim style.

There were still two sizes of Deep-French style custard cups - the 425 5-oz and 426 6-oz.

Standard Flare-Rim - may similar models were transitioned in and out of production lines

1937 –

Custard Cups were originally made of heavier-gauge glass – Flared or Deep-French style – both rimmed - until the release of New Thin Glass, Rimless Custard Cups in 1937, MPN 445 – which had a smooth upper edge and three molded concentric ribs or bands on the exterior side surface.

These rimless 445 Custards were released to coordinate with the Lidded Casserole Dish and were followed by more 3-rib, smooth edge custard cups, pudding cups, individual bakers, or serving dishes.

The term SWEET-And-LOW usually goes with these banded PYREX items.

Late 1930’s - Mid 1940’s -

Early – Rimmed – Shallow-Flared, Deep-French

1937 - Still the 414, 416 Shallow-Flared and 425, 426 Deep French were available.

1941, 1943 – The 414 Shallow-Flared and 425, 426 Deep French were available.

By 1947 only the rimless, dainty-glass, three band custards were available.

Dainty-Glass; Round; 3-Band

There was a design change to the Custard Cups and Individual small Baking Dishes - with three molded concentric ribs ½ way down the side, smooth and level top edge.

Smooth Upper Edge –

Custard MPN’s - These lovely, small, round pudding cups are elegantly designed. Each cup's base is fully rounded to the seat rim, beneath. The glass rises from the base and gently flares up and out - the 3 FULL concentric embossed bands, about mid-way or so up, finishing with a smooth top edge.

In 1937 the rimless, smooth-edge, three-band, thin-glass custard cup – MPN-445 - was released.

In 1941 came the Dainty 5-oz MPN-462 Custard Cups until 1947 where a 6 ½ oz MPN-463 Custard Cup and two sizes of Individual Baking and Serving Dishes - MPN-464, 9 ½ oz; MPN-465, 15 oz.

All Blankets are washed in Wool-Safe Laundry Detergent; dried on warm heat, until dry; photographed from both sides; folded and bagged loosely, then placed into a storage cupboard having cedar shingles throughout the cupboard until sold.

There are videos and web-sites on line which explain how wool items can be re-stretched to their proper shape or size (or closer to) – as shrinkage happens when washed and dried.
