Power Stop gives you the best of both worlds: let's start with the brake pads. OEM brake pads are a slew of compromises. They weigh several factors, including pad noise, dust generation, service life, cost, and – oh yeah, friction. However, what works well for the majority of people can be improved. These Z36 metallic brake pads have a 17 percent higher coefficient of friction than OEM pads, giving you more stopping power without having to stand on the pedal at the bottom of every long hill. That would make these pads a great upgrade over your stock rotors, but you've already decided not to go halfway. Don't try to repurpose your old discs, even if they still have enough meat on them after refinishing to meet minimum thickness specifications. A thinner disc has less mass. And because it takes a lot of mass to dissipate heat quickly, get a pair of Power Stop drilled, slotted discs at the same time. Heat is quickly absorbed by mass during a panic stop, but it takes surface area and moving air to keep the rotors cool on a long downhill or in heavy stop-and-go traffic. Cross-drilling a disc increases surface area for better cooling, but it also improves braking performance dramatically in the rain. Cross drilling prevents water from wedging between the pad and disc surface, causing the pad to hydroplane and severely reducing braking ability. Slotting does help in the rain, but it also has other benefits. During a high-speed stop, especially with a trailer or heavy load, the organic binders in the pad material literally boil. This is normal; the problem is that the outgassing binder turns the pad into a hot little air-hockey puck that barely touches the disc surface. It is supported by an outgassing binder pocket, which prevents the pad from coming into contact with a standard, unslotted disc. Instead of running the red light at the bottom of the hill with both feet on the brake pedal, slots sweep the gases away, allowing you to glide to a normal stop in time. It's not fun.
