Andre Derain (1880 - 1954): born in Chatou, which was a kind of artists' colony at the gates of Paris then. By the time he was forty, he was one of the most successful painters in Paris known for Paintings, sculpture-Fauve, and pointillism. But by the end of World War II, he had lost most of his fame. In 1906 Derain met Picasso and soon afterward signed a contract with Daniel-Henri Kahnweiler, Picasso's dealer. During the 1930s he gradually lost touch with many of his old friends. After a pubic divorce in 1954, Derain was branded one of the loneliest figures in the entire turbulent history of modern art.
