SONGYE

The Songye are found in the southern region of DR Congo and are said to have moved to this region in the 16th century. They are found in the Shaba area. They are related to the Luba tribe whom with at one time joined forces to fend off the Arabs.

Currently, the Songye are about 150 thousand and are governed by a chief but there are a copious number of secret organizations that are concerned with the machinations of governance.

The Kifwebe as the mask is locally known is supposed to hide of the spirits of the ancestors when a ritual is being performed. There are countless masks/figurines that the tribe has and which only help to accentuate the real beauty and originality of the tribe’s culture.
