History

Moroccan rugs are truly magnificent. The history of Moroccan weaving begins with the Berbers. The Berbers are a native tribe of North Africa, who had inhabited the Middle Atlas and the High Atlas mountains of Morocco for centuries before the First Arab invasion in the Seventh Century.

The vibrant colors and lively geometric patterns of Moroccan rugs are a distinct reflection of the ceremonial and day to day life of the Atlas Berber tribe. Each rug is a unique, free flowing artistic design that was often woven without a pattern or diagram.  These free form, expressive patterns are also seen in other art forms of the region, such as Moroccan art, ceramics, and architecture.

Also, one of the most important carpet-producing cities is the longtime Moroccan capital, Fres.  During the 13th century Fres was home to a great many weaving studios.  The coastal capital, Rabat is also famous for carpets woven with floral and diamond shaped elements and a fairly bare field.

Moroccan rugs are very popular today for their decorative flexibility.  They are gaining a growing popularity with interior designers for their quality, brightness, and warmth as well as their excellent ability to fit in a variety of spaces.  They have been utilized in famous mid-century modern decors as well as contemporary and traditional interiors.
