For sale:

75 gms approximately of pure natural pipe gum gamboge.

Gum gamboge (also spelt camboge) is a hard brittle yellow-brown coloured resin.  The main source is Thailand where the resin from the genus Garcina is collected into bamboo and after solidifying is broken open leaving the resin in its pipe form.  It is now a scarce and expensive resin.

Gum gamboge is soluble in alcohol and dissolves to form a dark yellow solution.   Gum gamboge has traditionally been used by luthiers in the varnishing process of violins and stringed instruments.   It is used by artists as a natural pigment and colouring matter in paints and varnishes.  It is also used in specialist trades (eg engraving) where its colour and adherence is important. It has cathartic properties and can cause skin irritation effects.

The Gamboge being sold is good quality ‘pipe’ gamboge.  For the small quantities supplied, it will normally be sold as small lumps or flakes, with some as powder.  We are also listing individual lumps sold by weight which are used by some specialist trades.  Note postage on lumps may be higher than flakes because of post office charges for thicker packets.  Please contact if you require large lumps, if not currently listed and we will endeavour to help if possible.

Other specialist natural resins are available in other listings in our ebay shop - (see 'Natural Resin and Varnish Supplies' shop listings) for example, dragons blood, dammar, gum benzoin gum arabic and gum sandarac.  We also list a range of waxed and dewaxed shellacs, including dewaxed blonde and super blonde flake, lemon flake and dewaxed orange flake shellac and other resin products.
