The sheet comes from a series published in 1796 by the French publisher and draftsman Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur (1757 - 1810) on behalf of the French Governing Board. This included the official costumes of French people's representatives and state officials, as well as French army uniforms from the time of the Governing Board. Following on from the democracies of antiquity, the new state costume in the form of coats, long robes and short tunics explicitly took up the clothing of the ancient Greeks and Romans.
