Building the St. Pierre Dory by Mark White

"Every other rock seems to have a dory freak under it"- Mark White

No doubt about it: Dories are definitely IN- they combine all the rugged

practicalities of a workboat yet are relatively easy to build, and they

are eminently seaworthy.Mark White's 28-foot modified St.Pierre dory is

an able design born in the French Territory of St. Pierre and Miquelon,

a region of extreme conditions off the southern coast of Newfoundland

that is not unlike the stormy shoreline in Alaska.

White describes in meticulous detail his process of building these

serviceable open powerboats. He is not dogmatic- he offers options at

every step. He built two successive St. Pierres before writing this

book, and lessons learned on "hull number 1" have been applied

perceptively to "hull number 2". White's use of strip-planking

contributes to the uniqueness of the volume- the first text which

thorough instructions and illustrations for this planking technique.

Detailed plans and drawings are included, and the many step-by-step

photographs make the book so complete that a beginner boatbuilder could

find the St. Pierre dory to be the ideal initial project.
