This watch was made and presented from 1959 to 1962 it’s near impossible to get year as Sandoz records are not available in depth.

As you can see the watch was manufacture by Sandoz a well known Swiss brand, that also made a civilian version of this watch in 1962 but with pins rather than fixed lugs, which leads me to think it’s likely year is 59/60

Real Madrid at this time often purchased watches from Sandoz to give to players, managers, coaches, directors, back room staff, visiting VIPs etc..

Real Madrid started selling watches in their shop in the late 60s early 70s again provided by Sandoz but nothing as grand as this, normally 33mm case.. a much cheaper product.

Real Madrid had a great run of form across seasons 1958-1962 wining the LaLiga and European Cup with an iconic team including Puskas and Di Stefano.

The Watch

As you can see I’ve renewed the crystal, the case is plated and shows it’s age but is untouched and has a stainless steel pop off back.

The watch size is impressive for its age being large at 40mm excluding crown.

The dial which has an even patina is off a sun bust design with sub dial and has gold hour markers.

The Real Madrid club logo on the dial is correct for this time and has helped in dating the watch. The club logo is also engraved on the watch case back.

The movement is working well and keeping time, however the wind is a bit knotty when winding (good 28hours) so a service is needed even though not straight away.. movement is a Sandoz Cal 867, which there are plenty of as it’s original purpose was for pocket watches, hence the case size..

Please be aware that I’m not saying this watch belonged to any particular person within the Real Madrid set up at this time, but being the quality it is it’s not been presented to everyone. Maybe the head groundsman but not his staff etc…

Real Madrid find themselves again in a European Cup final 2022 against Liverpool. You can bet your life that a gift watch order is pending somewhere.
