The Story of Pop magazine came out in 1973. It was a fortnightly magazine which looked into the 'history' of rock and was billed as the first encyclopedia of pop and accompanied a weekly radio programme of the same name. It was a unique magazine or part-work which tried too early to be a definitive guide to popular music. Written before the advent of punk, the writing is, through our modern eyes, actually quite naive, but lots of fun to revisit the opinions of early 1970s view of pop music.
The covers start out with unique artwork, only to become more traditional as time, and the editions, go on. Each issue also has lyrics of one or two songs featured, plus an alphabetic Pop File, giving details of bands.
In this issue:
- The Osmonds - A Family Act
- Neil Sedaka
- The Twist & Chubby Checker
- What is Soul?
- The Young Take The Lead - Cathy McGowan, Mick Jagger, Chrissie Shrimpton & Terence Donovan, Cynthia & John Lennon, Jane Asher & Paul McCartney, Mary Quant etc
The magazine has around 28 pages.
