1854 HEBREW Duties of the Heart
Jewish Law Vilnius Lithuania RUSSIA Judaica
A rare, 19th-century traditional
Hebrew text printing of the ‘Chovot
HaLevavot’ or ‘The Duties of the
Heart’.
‘Duties of the Heart’ was written by 11th-century Rabbi
Bahya ibn Paquada – a book which discusses unity with God, characteristics
and attributes of God, Jewish worship practices, Jewish law, asceticism, and
the immortality of the soul.
Hebrew texts from this era are considered
quite rare, but this edition was published in Vilnius, Lithuania while it was
under control of the Russian Empire. Nearly half of the population in Vilnius
was Jewish in the second-half of the 19th-century so it is
unsurprising to find Hebrew books printed in Vilnius.
