As the war progressed the Germans began converting more obsolete combat vehicles into support vehicles. It was not long before the logistics trains were bogged down trying to provide for old and new tanks. Therefore, in 1942 Krupp was ordered to begin new implementation to standardize and design new vehicles using existing Tiger components such as the engine, transmission, steel wheels, and track whenever possible. The beginning of the Grille (mortar) series of heavy self propelled was the beginning of this concept.

The Grille was operated by an eight man crew (driver, gunner, commander, radio operator, and four loaders). There were more loaders than the three rounds of ammunition that the Grill carried. The vehicle weighed 60 tons and armor thickness was 30mm on the front. The armor on the sides were 16mm. The top speed was supposed to be 45km/h on roads.

Although these types of tanks are referred to as “paper panzers” and never having made it off the drawing board, one of the actual prototypes with a 170mm gun was captured by the British in May of 1945. The partly assembled prototype of this whopping 210mm gun was found in 1945 by allied troops in Haustenbeck near Paderborn.
