I am a retired professional photographer and inventor with over 70 US patents. I needed a Leica camera repaired, and I was referred to, the legendary, Don Goldberg of DAG Camera Repair who is a factory trained Leica repairman. I shared with Don some of my Leica camera accessories and replacement parts that I 3D print. Don asked me if I could redesign his unique, though rather bulky, Frame-Lighter for the Leica M5 series of cameras. I love a challenge, so I jumped at the opportunity. I went through close to a dozen prototypes. I modified the circuitry, reduced the size, cleaned up the lines, and made it sleek. I also moved the activator button to the back of the unit so the photographer can easily activate the light with his thumb, leaving the index finger free to trip the shutter.

Don Goldberg “This design by Jim Rinner is what I originally envisioned the Frame-Lighter to be. 3D printing has opened up complex designs that could not have been economically manufactured in the past.”

The Frame-Lighter illuminates the camera’s viewfinder frame lines, NOT THE RANGEFINDER PATCH. This helps even in bright light, but in low light conditions it is amazing (see photos). Weighs 0.7 ounces (20 grams), uses one readily available 2032 3V battery. When installing & removing to & from camera, the front illuminating screen is raised and then lowered for viewing. The on-off switch is mounted on the back for easy activation with your thumb, leaving the index finger to trip the shutter.
