Gold vermeil consists of 14kt gold electroplated over sterling silver.  Gold vermeil is the highest quality of gold aside from solid gold.  Gold vermeil is real gold and differs from "gold plated" jewelry in that vermeil has a much thicker layer of gold, which makes it much more durable and long lasting.  Also, gold-plated jewelry tend to have a lower quality base metal (such as brass or copper), whereas vermeil is composed of all precious metal using sterling silver as its base.
