Always happy to bring a museum quality offering out on my Living Estate Sale. Today is a fine pair of late 18th C. engraving plate prints on woven paper created by Francesco Bartolozzi circa 1780 after original works by Carlo Maratta. There is always an objective measuring of plate marks, but I will state 32.1 cm x 45.1 cm for the plate impression on Allegory of TIme and 32.5 cm x 45.5 cm on the Portrait of Carlo Cignani. The overall sheets with their generous margins measure 36.5 cm x 50.5 cm. Plate marks converted to inches would be approx. 11-1/2" x 17-1/2". The first work "Allegory of TIme" described as Time holding a bust and treading on envy was created in 1767 and includes a pedestal engraving of "Chel'uem Trae Dal Sepolcro E A Morte Il Fura". The 2nd work entitled Portrait of Carlo Cignani was created in 1768. Many years prior to my possession these two works were apparently displayed as part of a fine created folio presentation or collection. There is binding evidence on one edge and a fine centerfold line as visible in my photographs. These engravings now lay very flat, and even with the fine seam line at center, offer a great presentation. Both engravings state F Bartolozzi del et Sculpt in Londra in the lower right and Carlo Maratta inv. in the lower left. Between 1790 and 1798 John and Josiah Boydell published a fine print collection entitled The Collection of His Majesty based on engraving plates purchased from Richard Dalton who was librarian to King George III. These works were printed in Brown Ink, and these two art works were also represented in that collection, although it is unclear as to whether Boydell acquired these plates or not in the purchase from Dalton. Bartolozzi was good friends with Dalton, and it was Dalton who convinced him to relocate from Italy to London around 1764. I would believe these works to be created by Bartolozzi prior to the Boydell 2 volume set from the 1790s.
