1868 FASHION English Woman
Domestic Magazine Illustrated Dresses Beeton Recipes
In mid-19th-century England, there was a
growing demand for literature on home-making and female interests. Numerous
magazines and periodicals were published to try to meet this demand. One such
work was Sam Beeton’s “Englishwoman’s
Domestic Magazine” – a magazine that, according to Diamond,
“targeted middle-class women and was an
immediate commercial success, with its clever mix of French fashion plates,
dressmaking paper patterns, designs for fancy-work, excellent recipes (by Mrs
Beeton), and serialized novels.”
This tome contains 23 full-page engravings
illustrating dresses and high fashion.
