John Tyndall (August 2, 1820 – December 4, 1893) was an Irish scientist and mountaineer. He is one of the first scientists to have identified the mechanisms leading to the greenhouse effect. The study of glaciers led him to travel several times to Switzerland. He became an accomplished mountaineer, the first to reach the summit of the Weisshorn (4,505 m) and he only narrowly failed to climb the Matterhorn in 1862: his guide advised to turn around shortly before reaching the Mountain peak.
