GENUINE AND ANTIQUE DOGON GRANARY DOOR FROM MALI

The Dogon people are a unique and full circle tribe originating from the western part of Africa in the country of Mali. The tribe is best known for its traditional dances, religious practices, agriculture, wood carvings and their architecture.

Intricately carved by hand, Dogon doors or shutters once embraced many granaries serving both to protect and sanctify the life-giving store of food contained inside. These antique door panels were far from normal featuring striking designs and figures that offer homage to ancestors and spiritual beings.

In return, it was believed the ancestors helped to keep evil spirits at bay and offer protection to families and their villages. Common figures seen on Dogon doors usually fall in the category of Human ancestors and animal spirits such as Crocodiles and lions.
