                                                                    APPLIANCE BUYER BEWARE GUIDE

We are in the appliance repair business for vintage high end brands. Such as THERMADOR, DACOR, DCS, WOLF, VIKING and JENN-AIR. We specialize with wall ovens and some ranges. When your repair person says "They don't have parts for your oven" That's when we step in. We do!

We acquire vintage used ovens and repair them for testing. Once, we get a general overview of the ovens condition. We strip them down for parts refurbishing. We have most wearable parts in like new condition, used for our own repair service. When we get too many of a certain part. We offer them on eBay.

Occasionally, we too have to buy on eBay and have noticed, it's a complete mess. There is no set standard or grading. We have noticed that the listings are often incorrect and may or may not even work! We will mention a few things to watch for.

Sealed New in box, This is your best choice, if you can afford it. Make sure you have diagnosed your problem correctly. Generally, there is no return privileges.

New open box, Check the transformer for heat stains and watch for water/oil stains around the relays. It is a common practice of the repair person to put the old bad part back in the new box or bag to either repair it later or return to the vendor. Then down the road, someone picks it of the shelf or the garbage and assumes its new and it ends up on eBay.

Refurbished, there is no set standard to the definition of refurbished. Usually, it means repaired by seller. This can get messy. If the board had a melted relay lead and was re-soldered, not replaced with a new high temp one. The relay is still bad and over heating and it will happen again. If it was refurbished by the manufacturer, they always place a repair label over the PROM. Well, it still can be used 10 year old and maybe not even work.

Repaired, often these boards are sent to an outside repair business, that will replace the bad single component. What about the other worn parts, a disaster waiting to happen again! Also these boards need to be tested with a complete working load using a working oven and drawing a full current. Not a bench test.

Used, good luck on these. It is a common practice of used parts dealers to acquire an oven and just cut out the parts and ship them. If it works for you, Great. If it don't, they refund your money. Parts often have the same problem, as your original bad part! This will lead you on a wild goose chase and most often foul up your diagnosis.

Whenever, we buy used parts online. They need to work and work good the first time. For the brands, we specialize in. We have resident ovens to retest and verify their condition. However, if your reading this, you probably do not. The first thing, we look for is display photos of the actual oven being tested and proof it was tested good! They also need to be heat tested. This is done by reassembling the oven with the top cover on and running it on broil 500 degrees for at least 2-3 hours. Turn it off, open the door partially to heat up the touch panel. If the panel is bad or going bad. It will error out.

If we are unfamiliar with a certain part. We will contact the distributor, as to interchange and/or compatibility. We have access to manufactures websites and know what to watch for. The online parts websites are often wrong. The part might be forward compatible with newer ovens and not backward compatible with older ovens or even list a part for a 30" oven that fit's a 27" only. Common! Do your homework, before you purchase.

We have also noticed that on eBay, often it's the blind leading the blind on part numbers. Only one seller has the correct part number. You need to do a visual on your part and make sure it match's, even when you think you have the correct part number. It can look the same, however a different voltage or revision. Contact the seller, if in doubt. We don't mind. We would rather direct you to the correct part the first time, than have to retest a return.

Also, if your reading this, we can assume you have a broken oven and want to get it fixed. It is a common practice of eBay sellers to ship, when they get around to it! It has on occasion taken 3 weeks to get my part. How do I explain that to my customer? Check the sellers shipping method and delivery times. For us, 5 working days is acceptable and as good as it gets.

In order to set out on a good foot. We will need the model number. On vintage Thermador wall ovens. Open the top door. Using a flashlight, look through the vent grill on the right side. It will start with C, CM, SC, SCD, SM, SMW... The model number is the only way to get things right. If your oven is a SCD302TB. I know it is a 30" double oven, dual convection with black glass doors. Yes, it is that easy.

Caution. Be gentle with any and all connectors. They have older non-lead solder, which becomes brittle over time. This is a big mistake made with DIYers, that we have noticed many times. We get many used ovens in, that the DIYer broke a contact or bent a pin. So close, but no cookies with your cigar. This is not really as difficult as I make it appear. I don't want to scare you off!

Also, We commend you on your intention of repairing, rather than replacing. These ovens are absolutely beautiful and in our opinion, best of class. You can replace them with a newer model, that won't last as long or bake cookies any better.

If you are a seller, installer or repairman sitting on a stack of these bad boards. We want to hear from you! Maybe we can work out a deal.
