Shoe Lace Repair

If you need to repair or shorten some shoe laces, this listing offers some aglets (shoelace ends) for you. They are available in a choice of black or (the more common) clear/transparent variety. They can be used on laces of any shape, colour or pattern and are very easy to attach. The end of the lace is inserted into the aglet, which has an inbuilt shrinking action when heat is applied, and it will typically shrink down around the lace to about half its initial diameter.  Hair straighteners, a naked flame or boiling water are all viable heat applications to shrink the aglets although full instructions will be sent with your order. The aglets come in the following (unshrunk) diameters:
  • 6.4 mm (reducing to approx 3.2 mm when shrunk) - suitable for thick ribbons and heavy duty laces
  • 4.8 mm (reducing to approx. 2.4 mm when shrunk) - suitable for broader flat laces, most ribbons and thicker, medium duty laces
  • 3.2 mm (reducing to approx 1.6 mm when shrunk) - suitable for the majority of other laces including round, oval and some flat laces
  • 2.4 mm (reducing to approx 1.2 mm when shrunk) - suitable for very narrow laces
We have found that some buyers are unsure which size aglet may be required so offer a choice of four different kits as follows:

Kit 1:  8 each of 6.4 mm and 4.8 mm
Kit 2:  8 each of 4.8 mm and 3.2 mm
Kit 3:  8 each of 3.2 mm and 2.4 mm
Kit 4:  Full Monty - 8 each of all 4 diameters

Kits 1, 2, and 3 are made up of 16 aglets (8 of one diameter and 8 of the next smaller diameter) and the "Full Monty" kit is made up of 32 aglets (8 of each diameter). We can tell you that an aglet is typically 20 mm long although unless you advise us to the contrary, your order will be dispatched in single lengths of 160 mm (8 x 20 mm) and  this will minimise wastage for you by enabling you to cut the aglet to the exact length you require. Please note that the shrink feature of the aglets affects just the diameter and not the length. Please also note that the stated diameter sizes are the internal measurement. Please let us know if you would prefer any different variation of sizes as we will always be happy to accommodate. Please also note that we have coloured aglets (red, green, white and blue) in a separate listing. It is Ebay item number 156040531578 and if you enter that number in the search box, it will take you there.

It is in any event important to try and buy the smallest unshrunk diameter that you think will accept the end of your lace or ribbon. This will give the best, neatest and tightest fitting result. If you have laces, perhaps of cord or rope, that are larger than 6.4 mm diameter and require a larger aglet, we have a separate listing for aglets with an unshrunk diameter of 12.7 mm. These will be suitable for lace/rope/cord of between 6.5 mm and 12.5 mm diameter. They are Ebay item number 285258203238.

It is important for you to be aware that the aglets on commercially produced laces, such as those that come with new shoes, are produced using ultrasonic heating or plastic moulding machines that cost hundreds of thousands of pounds. It is consequently unlikely that your home produced laces/aglets will have a similar professional quality but the use of this heat shrink method is however universally accepted as a safe and, to most people, reasonable alternative.
