Drops of brandy -

a song title linked to a tune which is no longer used for this dance but it is still useful as a label provided you don’t expect to dance to that tune the distinctive figure is a strip the willow have performed in a set of four or more, couples with a Schottische or hop step hence the choice of Schottische tunes

Pins and needles -

might be described as an English version of the country dance “Scottish reform” the border dance is being careless about mere national boundaries. The distinctive figure here is the “balance for in a line” and like most dances to “Jig” tunes the style is gay and stimulating

Sylph -

A set dance from Northumberland for six people two men each with two partners facing across the set. the men Gallup their women one at a time across the back, dance a reel of three with both of them and begin and finish with a forward and back. it can be used progressively in long sets around the room.

The triumph -

Danced in many parts of England this version has been shaped by North country style and by the rant step with the triumph figure it is one of the liveliest of all the dances. (Douglas Kennedy)
