Legendary sports car "Cosmo Sport"
The Cosmo Sport, the world's first car equipped with a two-rotor rotary engine, made its public appearance in October 1963 at the Tokyo Motor Show (then All Japan Automobile Show). When Tsuneji Matsuda, the president at the time, drove to the venue with a prototype, it shocked people. Excellent driving performance in beautiful and futuristic proportions. It was a car that really embodied the word "Flying rather than running".
A History of Hardships and Challenges・Rotary Engine
The development of the rotary engine at Mazda started in 1961 and has been a history of hardships and challenges for the past six years. Among them, the biggest difficulty was the "chatter mark" (wave-like wear) that appears on the inner wall after a certain period of operation, the so-called "devil's claw mark". After many challenges, they finally overcame this difficult problem by developing a seal made of high-strength carbon material impregnated with aluminum, and Mazda's rotary engine was born. While many manufacturers gave up on development, Mazda succeeded in putting it into practical use. The rotary engine-equipped car "Cosmo Sport" was born from the passion and obsession with rotary.
