It was arranged by the composer and teacher Nikolai Leontovich in 1916 and tells about a swallow that flew into the house to sing the wealth that will come with next spring. Initially, "Shchedryk" was sung on the night of January 13, on New Year's Eve according to the old style (December 31, according to the old style), that is, Generous Vechir. The first performances of the work were made by students of Kyiv University.

"Shchedryk" was later adapted by Peter J. Wilhousky as the English Christmas carol "Carol of the Bells" after the original song was performed by the Alexander Koshyts Ukrainian National Choir at Carnegie Hall on October 5, 1922. Wilhousky is copyrighted and published. . his new lyrics (which were not based on Ukrainian lyrics) in 1936, and the song became popular in the US and Canada, where it became strongly associated with Christmas.
