Twenty-one hours feature no other artist but Harry James and His Melody Makers. The remaining nine hours are radio shows in which Harry shares the stage with other Big Bands or various other radio personalities.

Harry James was a jazz musician and bandleader, and one of the most popular and dynamic trumpet players of the big band era. The son of circus performers, James learned to play the trumpet at 8 and led a circus band at 12 years of age. As a young man he played with various orchestras, including a stint with Ben Pollack and Benny Goodman’s orchestra. James’s playing style was bold, loud, and brassy, with a full-bodied tone even in extreme registers. He was regarded technically assured and a prodigiously talented trumpet player of the late Swing Era and early postwar years. The turning point for James when he had a hit with “Music Makers” (which resulted in the occasional billing of his band as “Harry James and His Music Makers”). James became so popular in the early 1940s that his record label (Columbia) was at one point unable to press enough of his records to meet demand
