Description: First Edition. Hardcover. Scarce work on the shoeing of horses, predating the Grimshaw bibliography of British Horse books date range by over 30 years. Cloth backed paper over boards, title stamped in gilt onto leather spine label, colored eps, 8vo size (8-7/8 inches tall), pp. [i], ii-x, [1], 2-304, [305], 306-309, [310] (postscript), [305], 306-308 (*n.b. list of plates page numbering repeats similar to postscript), half-title, fore and bottom edges untrimmed, illustrated w. 10 engraved plates - one being bound at tp as the frontis, as per binder's instructions at end of list of plates. Likely an early 20th c. rebind. Volume w. edges rubbed, corners bumped and rubbed through, toning to text block edges, modest spotting to plates - a little more so to frontis and tp. Frontis plate recto with "Arbuthnott House" written in an old hand. Arbuthnott is a large Scottish estate and castle, "... located in the Howe of the Mearns, in rural Aberdeenshire [Scotland]. It has been the home of the Arbuthnott Family for 37 generations (as of 2023) and nearly 900 years." from the estate's website. Very Good.

Includes a single, loose sheet containing four different recipes for hoof ointments, written in blue ink onto modern lined paper having a tape repair at bottom.
