Superb and very, very rare 9’ Victorian pitch pine estate gate or possibly a toll gate. This is a beautifully fashioned gate, with carefully shaped rails and carved uprights. I think it may have been made by a wheel wright, given the spoke style cross members. It also retains all its original wrought iron straps and latch. The latter is what I think you call a riding latch, or similar - basically, you can open it without dismounting. The latch is blacksmith made with a naive snake’s head terminal. Really beautiful. It’s a self-closing gate, by the way, and I have both plates, pictured. I also have the keep section in the shed, so it’s all there to make a an imposing entrance to a nice house. It’s nice foot wide and nearly five foot high.

Given its age, and the perishable quality of wood, this is a really rare thing. I’ve fully restored it, removing and cleaning all iron work down to bare metal, red oxide priming and re-painting. The whole gate is undercoated and has two coats of Farrow and Ball Lime White. It’s been stored for decades and covered since restoration.

This is a really rare and desirable piece, fit for a National Trust property, a Chelsea Flower Show garden or just a rather posh house. I just haven’t had time to deal with it, so it’s looking for a new home.

I don’t particularly want to part with it, so I’m not giving it away, but it’s priced reasonably for a rare, fully restored piece. The only thing that needs doing is trimming the tails of the bolts and blobbing a bit of black paint on it.

Will negotiate ‘a bit’ on price, so drop me a line. Collection only from Rye, E Sussex.
