【Keith Haring skate deck】
Skateboard deck designed by Keith Haring (1958-1990) for Pop Shop.
A work depicting two serpents growing from the head of a skeleton,
a symbol of death, being eaten by dragons and being burned by hellfire.
The upper deck depicts a human soul trapped in death leaving its body,
while the lower deck depicts a Puritan tomb winged skull, alluding to Hering's origins.
It can also be taken as a Christian iconography representing heaven, hell, and the salvation of the soul.
At the same time, it seems that the motif is Memento Mori,
which is used as an epigram to remind oneself that one is mortal.
There is a fable 'La Danse Macabre' that shows the view of life and death in medieval Europe,
in which people dance frantically in the face of the fear of death caused by the plague epidemic.
It reflects Haring's own unfeigned state of mind (view of life and death) against the backdrop of the fear of modern people living side by side with AIDS, which was considered a deadly disease at the time.
It seems that he has a premonition of the fate that will come to him in a few years.
