ITEM SPECIFIC DESCRIPTION:

Overall size is roughly 36" x 48". Give or take a little because of the folds, the map may settle a little bigger when smoothed.

1924 Soil Survey Geologic Map of Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Map was produced and published by the United States Department of Agriculture (Bureau of Chemistry and Soils) and the Massachusetts Department of Agriculture. The map was folded inside a 9" x 6" 60-page report written by W.J. Latimer (USDA) and M.O. Lanphear (MDA). The publication is labeled "Number 26" and "Series 1924" on the top of the cover.

The map itself is in excellent condition and would be "Fine" if not for 3 small tears at the folds. As this map has probably been folded inside this booklet for roughly 100 years and these were the outer layer and corners (thus most "stretched") of the folded map, they were predictably vulnerable spots. These tears are shown in the centers of photos 4 and 5 (about an inch long each) and the top right corner of photo 6 (about 1/4" hole with flap of paper). If you're having trouble seeing them in photos 4 and 5, it's because there is no loss of material and the map in those areas is "busy" enough where it remains hidden. The small hole in photo 6 is more obvious because it's on a white/blank part of the map, but similarly there is no loss of material, so if the map is smoothed, mounted and framed, its appearance could be minimized/eliminated by an average skilled framer. Overall, the map was protected by the booklet/report in which it is enclosed.

BOILERPLATE DESCRIPTION:

Last year, I cleaned out an old bookstore in Southern, VT that had been in on-and-off operation for 60 years. The owner passed away a few years ago and the books and other contents sat in storage boxes and shelves as the estate was worked out. As I cleaned it out, I sorted the contents by topic/format/genre where they now sit in climate-controlled storage.

Please expect some light foxing on page edges, shelf/storage wear, light "old book" smell and other indications of use and age. Unless indicated, I do not include books in lots that are significantly damaged or falling apart unless they are particularly old, interesting, or potentially valuable.

Please examine photos carefully. "Item Specific Description" above should be assumed correct in the rare event of contradictions between this general description/disclaimer. In the event of a found book/magazine has “old book smell”, it gets a treatment in an ozone terrarium to eliminate odors. I do vacuum and wipe down books and will investigate any obvious clues to potential condition issues within, but I do not examine every page thoroughly. Unless particularly valuable or interesting, I do not include books in lots that are significantly damaged (Poor or Fair) and always indicate and better describe such exceptions. Additionally, I will usually note if a book is in particularly excellent condition.
