RetroScaler2x AV to HDMI Up-Scaler Converter Nintendo N64 NES Game Cube Famicom

RetroScaler2x AV to HDMI Up-Scaler Converter Nintendo N64 NES Game Cube Famicom

So, you want to play your Retro Games on a modern TV, unfortunately your modern TV finds very difficult to handle the resolution or refresh rate of your older retro consoles, if at all. But there is a solution, you’re going to need to convert your retro systems Video and Audio (AV) output into something that your modern TV can process.

Your old console Video output is such a low resolution that the Video will look very blurred on your modern TV (if it will pay it at all).

This is where the RetroScaler 2x comes in, the RetroScaler 2x not only converts a CVBS (Composite), YPBPR (Component) or S-VIDEO output to a HDMI output that your TV will happily accept, but it also doubles the resolution to take that fuzzy, blurred signal and turn it into a signal that can be enjoyed on your modern TV, yes DOUBLES.

It also goes one step further and removes the old Horizontal Lines that the output typically had, you may have seen that when playing your old consoles, the CRT TV you had at the time displayed very small, very faint horizontal lines on the screen, the RetroScaler 2x has an option to remove these lines for a better picture. (It gives you the option to remove these, as some people like this old type of look, it can give a more authentic ‘retro look’.

Now all the technical stuff:
Zero Lag:
The RetroScaler2x is a zero lag device, having been tested and proven using multiple measurements and a multitude of devices. Zero lag is an important factor in the world of gaming to ensure only the best performance.

Source Signals:
Both NTSC and PAL signals are supported, but they are not converted to each other.
Whilst you can plug in whatever signal your target device is compatible with, but NTSC might not work on PAL HDMI-compatible devices and vice versa.
Please note: the RetroScaler 2x does not accept the ‘Brazilian PAL-M’ format.

Input Cables (not included):
You have the option of three types of Cable input to the RetroScaler 2x:

  • CVBS – this stands for Composite Video Blanking and Sync, but is generally known as ‘Composite’ Cables, (the Yellow, Red and White Cables) these may already come with your retro system, if not they are the easiest to source.
  • YPBPR – this is a cable set known as a ‘Component’ cable, usually Green, Blue and Red.
  • S-VIDEO – this is an analog cable for standard definition video and is a single cable.

Remember, if you need to source cables please ensure they suit your particular Retro Console.

Output Cable (not included):
The RetroScaler 2x outputs to a standard HDMI cable, accepted by all modern TVs.

Signal/resolution:
Input Source: 240p/480i/288p/576i NTSC/PAL
Output Source Converted: 480p/576p HDMI compatible output (for NTSC 480p, for PAL 576p).
The RetroScaler 2x outputs a true 480p 60Hz signal, making it compatible with all modern TV set ups. Compatibility is a big issue for retro-gamers, as modern displays aren’t uséd to the resolution or refresh rate of these older consoles. This device is an excellent help for streamers who want the highest chance of compatibility.
For the example:
A 240p signal input is converted to a 480p full progressive double line.
A 480i signal is deinterlaced and doubled to 480p.
The output resolution of the RetroScaler 2x can be as high as 480p / 576p.

Filter Mode:
The “FIL” mode is completely preference-based, however the average retro-gamer prefers the FIL mode off for 2D games (SNES, Genesis, etc) and on for 3D games (N64, Saturn, etc).
Also, the FIL mode can help reduce flicker with some 480i-only games.

Audio Performance:
The RetroScaler 2x outputs a digitised audio through the HDMI output, this digitised output is very good for everyday use, however, if using a Home Theatre system or the like you may wish to route the Audio around the RetroScaler 2x altogether.

Pass-through Mode:
By putting the RetroScaler2X into pass-through mode, incoming composite, s-video or component signals are simply transparent and digitized into HDMI-compatible. Support for 240p is rare in the world of HDMI-compatible, but by adding a simple HDMI-compatible to VGA converter, you can convert the signal back to the analogue domain again. This makes the unit a perfect transcoder to go with 15 kHz displays like PVMs, or of course, the OSSC.

Power Supply:
The older version of the RetroScaler 2x required a 240V power supply.
With the latest version of the RetroScaler 2x (that we have here) is powered by a standard USB supply. The RetroScaler x 2 comes with a standard USB cable, but does not include a USB ‘charger’ / power source.
The RetroScaler 2x is compatible with any USB ‘charger’ / power source.

Important things to consider:
You must have an output from your device
The RetroScaler 2x will only work if your device is working and outputting a signal – I know this sounds obvious, but if your device is not working the RetroScaler 2x will not make it work.
Old TV Aerial Lead
The RetroScaler 2x does not accept the old “TV Aerial lead”, if your console has one of these you will need to get a Composite / YPBPR / S-VIDEO cable suitable for your console before using the RetroScaler 2x.
Your Compatible Cables
If your Composite / YPBPR / S-VIDEO cables are not compatible with your retro console, then the RetroScaler 2x will not ’make them compatible’ – again, I know it sound obvious.
