Blue Peter
Eighteenth Book

BBC TV - 1981

Blue Peter is the longest-running children's TV series in the world, having been first broadcast in 1958 and still being shown today. Much of its success is owed to the editorial team led by Biddy Baxter, who was the programme's editor from 1965 to 1988.

The programme follows a magazine/entertainment format, featuring viewer and presenter challenges, competitions, celebrity interviews, popular culture, and sections on making arts and crafts items from household items. The show is known for its presenters, who often stayed for many years.

The programme has featured a number of pets including dogs, tortoises, cats, and parrots, and is also known for its hugely successful annual money-raising appeals, which often involved sending in everyday items such as used postage stamps or balls of wool which could be recycled or re-sold.

The longevity of Blue Peter has established it as a significant part of British Culture and British heritage.

The first Blue Peter Book was published in 1964, and it has become a favourite "Annual" for children, though right up until 2004 it was always simply called the Blue Peter "Book", rather than the Blue Peter Annual, to distinguish itself from the many other "Annuals" on sale.

The Eighteenth Book was published in 1981, and examples of the content can be seen in the photos.
